Women's Aid

Residents speak out

What Tracey says:
I have two little girls aged 4 and 7 years old. When I first got to Grimsby I was scared and frightened, I was out of my hometown away from my family and friends and when I arrived at the refuge I was more frightened. I did not know anybody at all. We walked in and I looked around, I thought ...

Your Safety

Sometimes it may be possible to ‘plan’ to leave; below is some information you may need to help you:

  • Carry a list of relevant phone numbers to call in an emergency, for example friends, relatives, police, Women's Aid. Everyday numbers can be forgotten in a crisis.
  • Identify where is the nearest phone in an emergency, for example friends, neighbours.
  • Try to put some money aside for bus/taxi fares etc.
  • Make up a small bag with overnight clothes and keep it at someone else's house.
  • Keep bank/finance details, benefits books, telephone numbers, important documents, etc., safe and easy to find.
  • Keep a diary of events as they happen to ensure you don't forget and for future evidence if necessary.
  • Think about taking the children, whatever the long-term arrangements are going to be.
  • If possible, and if the children are old enough, you may want to talk to them about safety and the possibility of having to leave in a hurry. They probably know what is happening and will need explanations.
  • Try to leave when the perpetrator will be out of the house for a long period of time.
  • If possible pack a few favourite toys, school books, etc., for the children.
  • If possible take any personal possessions such as jewellery, photographs and items of sentimental value.

You should not undertake any of the above if it is not totally safe to do so

One final security measure...

At the top of each page of this website you will see a green button...

When you click this button your web browser will be redirected to the bbc's website to make it look as though that is the site you are looking at (not ours). Additionally, clicking the back button on your browser will not take you back to the women's aid website.

However you will still need to delete the physical history of your browser and the store of picture files (cache), which can be done by following the simple steps below:

  • Internet Explorer: Pull down Tools menu, select Internet Options.

On General page, under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files. Under History click on Clear History.

  • If you use Firefox, go to the Tools menu, click on "Clear Private Data"

Make sure you have the tickboxes ticked as shown below and then click the "Clear Private Data Now" button.

  • AOL: Pull down Members menu, select Preferences. Click on WWW icon. Then select Advanced. Purge Cache. If an abuser has access to your e-mail account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail.

Once you've cleared your cache, others can't go back and look at files you've accessed. This extra protection will help keep your information private and you safe.
