Days For Girls – Your Chance To Make a Huge Difference

Day For Girls Saturday 16th September 1am-4pm

We’d Love you to join us in supporting A Day For Girls on Saturday 16th September…

Days for Girls (DfG) is a world-wide “hands-on” project which involves volunteers coming together to make washable and easy to use, feminine hygiene kits for girls in developing countries.

Why We Support Days for Girls

Due to poverty, in many developing countries, many girls have no feminine hygiene provision and can’t go to school during menstruation, therefore missing out on large parts of their education. (One week in every 4)

In some poor rural areas, women and girls are locked inside during menstruation because they are deemed to be ‘unclean’ and there have been some horrendous fatalities occurring because of neglect during these times.

Introducing feminine hygiene kits into schools not only helps to give the girls uninterrupted education but it also helps to educate the wider community.

The kits give not only the girls but their mothers and other women, the dignity & chance to take control of their own situations, which is a hugely empowering process.

What We Do

Here at Women’s Aid we run FREE workshops to make up the low-cost and cleverly designed kits, which are then packed by volunteers into attractive drawstring bags – each lasting for up to 3 years.

As well as the 2 ‘shields’ and 8 liners, the bag/kit also contains pants, wash cloths & plastic bags.

The kits are taken by volunteers to overseas projects run by Rotary, Churches, & other voluntary organisations.

In some areas the introduction of kits have enabled women to start up small businesses making the kits themselves, particularly in parts of Africa; greatly encouraging self-sustainability.

How You Can Help

We are looking for women of all ages (over 15yrs) to join us in our workshops to make kits for the girls. We need the time, skills, talents and energy of local women in NE Lincs to improve the lives of women and children worldwide.

You can enjoy chatting networking, self-development, new friends new skills and just generally have fun whilst doing something worthwhile.

We need volunteers to help with:

  • CUTTING FABRIC
  • DRAWING AROUND TEMPLATES
  • PINNING FABRIC ALONG THE EDGES
  • PRESSING / IRONING FABRIC FLAT
  • HAND SEWING PRESS STUDS ON
  • MACHINE SEWING THE ITEMS

We even need someone to help with making a well earned cuppa throughout the day!

Funding The Project

The project relies on fundraising to pay for equipment and materials.

At Women’s Aid, we provide the room but if you can help with a collection or donation we’d love to hear from you, as fundraising allows the workshops to be run for free.

Other Ways You Can Help

We need help with donations of the following;

  • Brightly coloured/patterned thin/light cotton material – for drawstring bags & ‘shields’ (Please no fabrics with insects, animals or people and no white fabrics)
  • Pants – bright or dark patterns (women’s size 6-12 or girls’ age 12-14)
  • Gallon-sized zip-lock or slider-fastened strong polythene bags (this enables soiled items to be washed in small amounts of often scarce water)
  • Gutterman’s red cotton thread
  • Small press studs
  • Cord for the drawstrings
  • Facecloths in bright or dark colours
