Celebrating Volunteers' Week: Recognising the People Behind Our Work

TL;DR: During Volunteers' Week, we celebrated the amazing people who give their time to support Women's Aid North East Lincolnshire.

Volunteers play a vital role in helping charities deliver services, connect with communities and make a lasting impact. Last year alone, our retail volunteers contributed 36,853 hours of support – equivalent to more than £421,000 in salary costs at minimum wage.

Whether gaining new skills, building confidence or giving back to their community, volunteers make a difference both to organisations and to themselves and we are incredibly grateful for every volunteer who helps us continue our work across North East Lincolnshire.

Last week, we marked Volunteers' Week by celebrating the incredible people who give their time, skills and energy to support our work and throughout the week, we shared stories and highlights from volunteers across different departments, shining a light on the many ways they contribute to Women's Aid North East Lincolnshire and the communities we serve.

While Volunteers' Week may only come around once a year, the impact of volunteers is felt every single day.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers play an important role in charities and community organisations across the UK, bringing a wealth of experience, fresh perspectives and valuable skills that help organisations extend their reach and strengthen the support they provide.

At Women's Aid North East Lincolnshire, volunteers contribute in a variety of ways across different areas of the organisation. Their support helps us deliver services, raise awareness, engage with our community and continue working towards our mission of supporting those affected by domestic abuse.

The impact of volunteering can also be measured in very practical terms and during the 2024/25 financial year, our retail volunteers alone gave an incredible 36,853 hours of their time and if those hours had been paid at minimum wage rates, they would have represented a salary cost of £421,599.

These figures demonstrate just how significant volunteer contributions are to charities like ours and beyond the financial value, volunteers bring enthusiasm, dedication and a genuine commitment to supporting their local community.

Their contribution is invaluable and simply cannot be overstated.

Volunteers are often some of the most passionate advocates for a cause, as they choose to give their time because they believe in making a difference and that commitment helps create stronger connections between organisations and the communities they serve.

The Benefits for Volunteers

Volunteering is not only beneficial for organisations, it can also have a positive impact on the individuals who choose to get involved.

Many people volunteer to gain experience, develop new skills or build confidence, while others are looking to meet new people, give back to their community or simply support a cause that's important to them.

Every hour volunteered represents an investment in the local community and whether that contribution is visible to the public or happens behind the scenes, it helps organisations continue delivering vital services and support.

The collective impact of volunteers extends far beyond the tasks they carry out. Their involvement helps build awareness, strengthen community networks and create lasting positive change.

Volunteers' Week gave us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people who support Women's Aid North East Lincolnshire throughout the year, from those who help behind the scenes to those who represent us within the community and we know that every contribution makes a difference.

We are grateful for the time, dedication and commitment our volunteers bring to the organisation. Their support helps us continue our work and strengthens our ability to support those who need us.
