The First Yes

Sometimes empowerment doesn’t start with confidence.
It doesn’t start with a plan.
It starts with one quiet, terrifying decision.
Yes, I need help.
Yes, I know I can’t do this on my own anymore.
Yes, something has to change.
Walking through our doors is often the hardest step a woman will take and it can feel heavy with fear, shame and uncertainty.

This is Tracy’s story.
I’d always thought I was strong. I’d always managed on my own, but after 25 years I was finally broken.
I couldn’t keep silent or put up with his behaviour any longer. He’d had control over everything. I had no finances, no education and an empty CV.
Walking into the Women’s centre was the hardest thing I’d ever done. I was so embarrassed and ashamed. I’d hidden things for so long I would have quite happily run.
Luckily, there was an amazing volunteer waiting for me. She brought me in and made me a cup of tea and listened while I cried, until a support worker arrived.
It took 2 years, with my support worker constantly being there, for me to finally get untangled from my perp.
I did 'Freedom' twice and 'Own my Life and Survivors Groups and slowly I began to get my sparkle back.
Without the help of volunteers, who enable the shops and everything else to keep running, there would not have been the funding and I would not have made it through, and for this I will always be eternally grateful.
I have been a volunteer now for over a year and once again Women’s Aid has been the gift that keeps on giving. My confidence has soared, I’ve gained new skills and have something amazing to write on my CV.
I am finally becoming the person I was always meant to be.
